Accentuate the Positive

In the year 1944, during a dark time for families and the country, singer and songwriter Johnny Mercer wrote what would be one of the war’s most iconic songs of hope and inspiration: “Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative.” Why did this song become such an anthem of encouragement? Because through the power of music, the lyrics reminded the country that vision, hope, and inspiration  are achieved by dwelling on those things which are good, excellent and praiseworthy.

Positive Thoughts QuotesWe can all have seasons in our life, our families, and our relationships that can be an unfamiliar, dark place. During these times, it can be human nature to lean toward negative thinking. Our imagination can run wild, we can be gripped with fear, and our conversation can be that of murmuring and complaining. Accentuating the positive in our lives, however, helps us to find and spread joy when we are forging through difficult times.

I am not suggesting that we dismiss the reality of conflict and darkness, that we silence criticism and correction, nor deny ourselves painful emotions. I am suggesting, however, that we soothe our emotions and spirit by setting our minds to dwell on good, truthful, heavenly things. We don’t have to dwell on whatever comes into our head.

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–let your mind dwell on these things.Philippians 4:8

When a group of negative thoughts comes knocking at the door of your mind, you have the power and authority to keep the door shut. You don’t have to let those negative thoughts into your mind and throw them a party by letting your mind dwell in a dark, negative place. Replace that negative thinking by intentionally seeking the positive so that the words of your mouth are filled with affirmation, vision and hope. Life and death  are in the power of the tongue, Proverbs 18: 21. Have a necessary and compelling sense of thankfulness, praise, and optimism. Let this be a non-negotiable in your daily walk and you will find you will have more strength for the seasons of battles.  The joy of the Lord is your strength, Nehemiah 8:10.

Having a gratitude journal is an excellent exercise  for building the discipline of accentuating the positive. Dwell on and write down the following every day:

  1. Three things you look forward to happening .
  2. Three things you are thankful for having.
  3. Three things you like about yourself.

The gospel means “good news” so accentuate the positive!
